Why are Rescue Dogs hard to place?
Although most of the dog adoption organizations have the right idea and want to help dogs, the problem is that they are not doing what is necessary to take care of dog's behavior problems prior to placing them. This is why most adoption organizations have a very low placement success rate, and many of the their dogs are returned to them.
What will increase the success rate?
Training is one of the integral parts of preparing a dog to be successfully placed into a new home. Basic obedience training teaches a dog that there are some rules that have to be followed. The training will also enable the new adopter to have some tools to incorporate, in order to manage the dog in their home.
Why does a Rescue Dog have to be properly matched with his new owner?
One of the objectives of our program is to properly match the dogs in our program with the correct adopter. Many rescue organizations are not forthright with the adopters regarding behaviors. Therefore, the adopters are taken by surprise when their new canine friend acts in a way that is not acceptable to them. These behaviors can range from barking excessively to trying to attack people and dogs. Therefore, our program will properly screen adopters and more importantly, properly prepare adopters.
Where do the dogs come from?
We are currently allowing rescue organizations to apply for us to accept dogs that they are unable to place because of behavioral problems. We will first test the dog and decide whether or not to accept the dog into our program. Accepting the dog is based on a number of things, including kennel space and available funding.
Can I volunteer with your program?
Yes! We are currently seeking volunteers in many areas for our program. We need assistance in managing, organizing, fund raising, socializing, and training the dogs. If you feel you have what it takes to be a part of a ground breaking program, please contact us.
The T.U.R.D. Program
The T.U.R.D. Program is unique because of its proactive approach to training rescue dogs. The problem with most rescue organizations is that they do not have the resources to properly train their dogs, which would increase the likelihood of successful placement. The T.U.R.D. Program relies on the generosity of K-9 Behavior Services' clients, and donations from adopters, to fund the kenneling, feeding, and training of each dog entered into the program.
