Why should I train my dog?
There can be a number of reasons to train your dog. The most important one... To have the best possible relationship you can have with your dog, and yes, obedience training will help you with this task! Obedience training will do a number of things, including the following-
*Build your dog's character.
*Establish communication.
*Increase the amount of dedicated/ quality time you spend with him.
*Strengthens the bond you have with him.
*Set boundaries so that he knows what is desired from him and what is not desired from him.
*Helps him to understand the confusing world that is around him.
Although the list could go on and on, these are just a few of the most important rewards of Dog Training. However, like anything in life, you get what you pay for. Some of today's training is borderline counterproductive. Although I do not try to get clients by criticizing other trainers, the truth cannot be avoided. Please take a good look at the experience and qualifications of any dog trainer you are considering. For example, if you have a dog with a serious aggression problem, you would not want to go to a trainer that claims to have learned from 'watching dogs play', you want to seek out a trainer that has some hands on experience with tough dogs. And yes, there are BAD dogs out there. So be careful, some trainers are so arrogant or naive, they themselves can get hurt badly because they often bite off more than they can chew, so to speak.
We are always open to meeting our clients first and discussing their needs and expectations. We always have many referrals, past and current, for our potential clients to talk to at their request. As you can see by our videos we accomplish some of the most difficult types of training. Feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you might have.
How young should my dog be when I start his obedience training?
AS YOUNG AS POSSIBLE!
The old school thought was to start training when the dog is about 6 months to 18 months. We have learned through experience that puppys can learn very young. As a matter of fact, most trainers will start inducive training with their own puppies as early as possible. The concept for pets, is to reward the puppies for the right behaviors, instead of punishing for the wrong behaviors. The truth is that the longer you wait to train your puppy, the harder it is on the puppy.
Can you teach an old dog new tricks?
Yes, old dogs can learn new tricks! In Southern California the popularity of dog adoption is growing quicker every day. Therefore, it is important for trainers to be able to work with dogs that are older and have already figured life out for themselves. It takes a little more finess, but don't ever let anyone tell you that a dog is a lost cause or can't learn anything new. As a matter of fact, it is very important to teach ALL dogs what the rules are, to provide safety for them and to help them live happier lives also.
Does Practice Make Perfect?
Practice does not make perfect,
'perfect practice' makes perfect!
It is very important when training to make sure you are being very precise and very clear with your dog. What may seem simple and obvious to you can be very confusing to your dog. Many people will tell me their dog knows what to do but is dumb or just won't do it. However, often times the client is truly confusing the dog and making it difficult for the dog to learn.
Obedience is the foundation to your relationship with your dog, primarily because it establishes communication, secondarily, because it defines the boundaries of your dog’s behavior. Therefore, if he understands you, and most importantly, what you expect from him, you can have a loving and calm relationship with him. The truth is… there really is no “Dog Whisperer.” There are just a few simple tools you need in order to begin to communicate with your dog. Step one is to teach him what it is you want from him so that he will know what to expect. Step two is to reinforce and become consistent with what you ask from him. I know it sounds easier than what it is. Therefore, the trainer’s job is to step in and teach you how to physically work with your dog, to be fair and patient while being confident and firm.
