It is very important to make sure your Protection Dog has proper maintenance training. At K-9 Behavior Services we are qualified to maintain and often times improve on the protection training your dog has already. Keep in mind that control of a Protection Dog is just as, if not more than, important than your dog's willingness and ability to bite.
Many Protection Dogs are sold and the owner is under the impression that the dog will always be in the top condition as when he was purchased. This is not the case. All Protection Dogs need to have consistant training so that they can stay at the top of their abilities. Protection Dogs are like athletes. And as you know, even the most impressive athletes in the world have to train hard and train smart in order to stay at the top level.
We are always open to meeting with clients that have purchased dogs from other trainers so that we can advise them on what is the best maintenance training program for their Protection Dog.
What if I purchased my dog from another trainer?
We are often times called upon by people that have purchased Protection Dogs from other trainers and want to know if we can help them to maintain their dog's training and often times want to know if we can build upon their dog's training. We have different programs our clients can choose from to get their dogs on an effective training program so that their dog can be the absolute best Protection Dog he can be.
Below are a few things we want to look at and work on...
~Obedience: Is your dog under control at ALL times, even in distractions?
It is very important that your Protection Dog respects and trusts you in all situations so that he is not a danger to innocent people. Having a disobedient Protection Dog is a dangerous and liable situation.
~Bite Work: Is your dog biting with confidence and a strong character?
Protection Dogs are trained many different ways by many different people. We are not out to criticise other trainers, we are simply here for you to help make your dog the best Protection Dog he can be. Therefore, we want to look at the dog and see what kind of foundation was put into him so that we can build on that foundation. We don't want the dog to bite thinking this is what he has to do to save his life. We want him to bite with confidence and we want to build his character so that he can feel confident in all situations.
~Grip: Does your dog have a deep and strong grip or is it shallow and weak?
There is a lot of technique used in our training. We want to make sure the dog is biting in a way that will keep him safe too. Remember that a dog is not just a tool to use like a weapon. A dog is your companion and friend and needs to be kept as safe as possible, even in the scariest situations.
~Temperament: How is your dog with people and other dogs?
We want to make sure that your Protection Dog is a social dog. A Protection Dog that perceives everyone as a threat is NOT a good Protection Dog and can be a very big liability. Protection Dogs should be highly social dogs that will accept people and be willing to make friends with them. Good Protection Dogs are taught to respond in context and by command.
