Although Josh has always had an interest in dogs and dog training, his multiple passions in life led him in many positive directions.
Josh joined the United States Coast Guard in April of 2000. His work ethic and ambitious nature quickly lent him to many different responsibilities and adventures. He has had the pleasure of being the crew chief for USCG Helicopter missions, worked joint task force missions with the following:
U.S. Fish and Game Wardens – Marine Wildlife Preservation
Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) – Targeting Counter Narcotics
U.S. Customs – Counter Terrorism
U.S. Border Patrol – Illegal Immigration
Josh is currently still working with the USCG while also attending Perdue University in Indiana. He is working to finish his degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
Josh’s passion for dogs brought him to K-9 Behavior Services a few years ago when he wanted his purebred rescue GSD, Tally, to learn protection training. Josh worked with Jeremy Talamantes and Stephanie O’Brien tirelessly to get Tally to an impressive level of training. Even though Josh was not a professional trainer, he was able to get Tally to an incredible level that many expert dog trainers could not do themselves. Tally can be found as the star of one of our protection dog training videos due to his excellent control and his clear ability to handle pressure. Throughout that period of hard work, Josh became ‘hooked’ on training and working dogs when he saw what he could accomplish and decided to pursue dog training on a professional level.
Josh began his apprenticeship under lead trainers Jeremy Talamantes and Stephanie O’Brien, learning all about common (and uncommon) behavioral issues in dogs. He started getting involved in our French Ringsport competition training and understanding working drives and aggression in dogs. He also began learning the dynamics of balanced dog training and our T.R.U.C.E™ program.
Since then, Josh has become a very skilled trainer and has taken on a new protégé, Fifa, a young Belgian Malinois from our Chenil de Loucyn breeding program. Josh is currently an active member of Three Rivers Working Dog Club in Indiana and enjoys training for competition level tracking, obedience and protection. He hopes to have Fifa on the competition field soon.
Josh is not only great at working with and teaching dogs but has also become an effective teacher with people. We are glad he is now part of the K-9 Behavior Services team and look forward to his growth and success with our company.
